Bait Handling

When using a cast net, do not dump fresh caught shad from the net directly into your bait tank.

Dump the contents of your cast net into a holding bucket that has been filled with lake water first.

The holding bucket gives you a chance to use your scoop net to pick the larger, better looking baits while discarding the weaker and smaller shad back into the lake.

This process also allows you to remove lake debris, picked up with the cast net. This keeps unwanted debris from clogging the filtration system in the main bait tank.

Keep a watchful eye on the bait that is in the tank during your fishing day. If you notice that the bait is getting red noses it might be a sign that salt needs to be added to your water. Also you will want to remove any bait that has died throughout the day. This will help in keeping the ammonia level of your water lower.

If you observe that foam is beginning to collect on the top of the water in the bait tank squirt a small amount of “Foam Off” into the bait tank and this should remove the foam. Foam is often caused when higher levels of ammonia from fish poop build up in your tank during a long day.

Be sure that you keep the actual handling of the bait to a bare minimum. Use of a scoop net throughout the day will help ensure longer life of the bait. Also do not scoop a large number of baits when you only need a few.

Please see our Supplies page for a photo of a scoop net. These nets are normally available at the better bait/fishing stores. If you are unable to obtain a good scoop net locally you can order one from us.
